Anything Good From The Pandemic For Retired People?

First let me explain that I know the COVID pandemic has been devastating for many people, especially for older folks.  Almost everyone knows someone who has suffered because of the virus.  This article is in no way meant to minimize the effects of the pandemic in any way.  I pray for anyone dealing with COVID, and especially for anyone who has lost loved ones.

For the rest of us, let’s be grateful and look at some of the little ways our lives may have improved as a result of changes made necessary by the pandemic.

Senior Hours

I love senior hours and take advantage of them whenever I can.  Of course, those 6:00AM grocery runs are tough!

Less Traffic

When you do venture out there is a little less traffic.  That is good for the nerves and saves a little time in your day.

You Might Be Saving Money

Less traffic saves money on gas and wear and tear on your car.  You are not eating out as much at restaurants and that can save a ton.  Even if you are using take out it is usually less expensive than sit down dining.

You Might Be Eating Better

In theory if you are eating more at home you might be eating more healthy meals.  This isn’t guaranteed of course but most homemade meals are better for you than fast food.  You might even get better at cooking which could be healthier long after the pandemic is over.

People Care A Little More, Or At Least Ask How You Are Doing

It’s weird, I’ve noticed people are generally more tense, but maybe a little more thoughtful of others.  I see this in little ways.  People are a little friendlier to cashiers in the store.  They say thank you to the delivery person.  On Zoom calls everyone asks how everyone is doing and if their families are healthy.  In this crazy political climate this is nice to see (I’m writing this in October, 2020.)  Hopefully this is another trend that will continue after the pandemic is long gone!

Good ForThe Environment

A little less driving means a little less pollution.  National and state parks are not as busy which is good for the animals and creates less strain on their ecosystem.  And when people do go to the parks, I think they appreciate them more.  In fact, during this pandemic I think we are all appreciating things we used to take for granted just a little more.

You Get More Reading Done

More time at home means more time for reading.  Yes, I know some people are just glued to the TV, but that gets old eventually.  Then people that haven’t picked up a book in a while might give it a try.  And avid readers just have a little more time to enjoy their reading habit.

You Are Really Learning How To Use Your Computer

Your computer is fast becoming central to communicating with the world.  This was already happening, but the pandemic has accelerated it.

More Remote Jobs

Remote jobs are easier for retired people that want to continue working.  And age discrimination is a little less of a problem.

You Try New Hobbies

The media has been touting the virtues of hobbies to help people cope.  Some are listening and it is good for us.  In my case I’ve always had the problem of too many interests, but I’ve gotten back to some that I drifted away from over the years.

More Exercise – At Home Or Outside

The media also has encouraged people to exercise more as a way to relieve stress.  I think they are listening.  I see more people outside walking.  Bike sales are way up.  Another trend that hopefully will continue.

You Hear More From The Kids

If you have grown kids you might be hearing from them more often.  Some of this might be out of guilt because they are afraid you might kick the bucket during the pandemic! (Only Kidding!)  But they also have a little more time and I’d like to think we all value our families a little more.

I pray for all of you going through the pandemic.  If you are fortunate enough to not be touched personally let’s all make the best of it!

Things To Do When The Weather Stinks

Sometimes the weather just plain old stinks and no amount of wishful thinking will help.  A gentle rain just might mean an umbrella and a walk in a light snowfall is great.  But wind driven rain that turns your umbrella inside out or a blizzard at 5 below sort of limits your possibilities!  So, what can you do when it rains?

Play A Game

You probably played a lot more games when you were younger.  Well, they still can be great fun!  For us nerdy types try a new computer game.  These days you don’t even need to go to a store.  With Steam and similar services most games are simply a download away.  Some are even free if money is tight.

Board games are another alternative.  They can be great fun.  If the weather permits, and you can invite some people over, you’ll have a blast, and make and renew some friendships.

Work on a Project

You probably have some projects sitting around that either you should start, or started a while back and never finished.  And I’m talking fun projects too.  Do you have a half done craft project in the closet somewhere?  Maybe some kind of project kit still sitting in the basement?  Dig them out.  Or start something new that you have been thinking about for a while.

Clean Basement

You know it needs it.  Take advantage of the inclement weather to get it started.

Clean Garage

If it’s not too cold in the garage you know it really needs a good cleaning and organizing.  Maybe you can even fit a car into it if you are successful!

Write an Article or Blog Post

Write an article or two.  Start a blog if you don’t have one already or write something for the one you already have.  Sometimes when the weather is bad outside you can focus on the writing and really make some progress.

Read

Spend a few hours reading.  You know you keep telling yourself you should read more.  Now is your chance.  Don’t have a book laying around?  With EReader apps available for most devices even if you don’t already have a Kindle type device a new read is just a few clicks away.

Work on a Book

Did you always want to start a book?  Today might be that day you start.  Make an outline or do some research.  Maybe you have a book you started a while back but never finished.  Now might be the time to kick it into high gear!

Organize a Small Area

Do you want to do something a little more practical?  Pick a drawer or closet.  Then empty it out to start eliminating and organizing.  It is amazing to me what accumulates in a drawer over time.  You might find something you thought you lost a long time ago.  You might find some items in the closet that you longer want.  You can donate the items or sell them on Craigslist or Ebay for a little cash.

Work on a Hobby

Today is the perfect time to get back to that personal hobby, whatever it may be.  Take advantage of the time indoors.

Clean or Maintain Something

We all have belongings that should be maintained and cleaned.  Maybe something needs oiling.  Possibly you can use some glue to fix a broken something.  (or you can finally decide it can’t be fixed and toss it.)

However you use your time during bad weather you might find it becomes one of your most productive days.  Most times you just need to get up from the TV and get moving.  Have fun!

Age Doesn’t Matter Online

Age doesn’t matter when you are online.  It’s one of those obvious truths that somehow hit me between the eyes recently. If you are wondering how you can stay productive as you age look to the online possibilities.

You can do many online activities in your 60s, 70s, 80s, or beyond!

It’s the ultimate never retire strategy.

Basics First

If the whole online scene seems a little foreign to you let’s take a look at some basic skills.

Can you use a browser?  The online world exists in browsers so get to know your browser and search engines.  It does not matter if you use Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.  Learn how to get the most out of your browser.

You need to write.  That means a word processor.  You can use Microsoft Word (subscription based,) Google Docs (free,) or Libre Office (also free.)

Spreadsheets aren’t just for financial gurus.  Besides keeping track of money matters you can use them to track almost anything.

Want to reach the world through the Internet?  That usually means a Website.  While there are lots of web site builders out there it might pay to learn WordPress.  WordPress is used by at least 30% of all websites on the Internet, far more than any other tool.  Learning WordPress is not too difficult and there is lots of help on the Internet.

So how will you stay productive?

Spread your message, whatever it is…

Your own website or blog can be your speaker to the world.  Whether you are sharing your hobby or ideas, a website or blog can be your way to share with the world.

You can learn stuff

There are thousands of ways to learn new things online.  Many sources are free and many others are quite reasonable.

My personal favorite right now is Udemy.  Many courses go on sale for about $10, and I’ve found most to be high quality.  A rating system lets you know what others think of the courses.  One great thing about online video courses is you can go back and re-watch anything that is not clear.  Give online learning a try!

You can keep working or start a business

There are many jobs that you can do remotely.  The interview is online.  The work is online.  The social interactions are online.  I am writing this during the great pandemic of 2020.  One of the lessons learned is that much work can be done remotely.  And in many cases no one really knows or cares how old you are if you can do the work.

You can start a business online and no one knows or cares about your age.  Your customer cares that you can deliver the goods!

Some businesses are close to regular jobs, but you work for yourself.  Here are some examples:

Freelance writer

Content is everywhere on the web and there is always demand for more content.

Web Developer

Once you learn how to build your own WordPress websites you can build them for others.  From there as you learn more technical skills the sky is the limit.

Virtual Assistant

As its name implies a virtual assistant works “virtually.”  Once you learn some basic skills you can use them to perform work for small businesses and busy entrepreneurs.

Next you have a whole assortment of business opportunities.  Here are just a few ideas:

Sell Stuff

You can start with all that extra stuff you have sitting around the house and maybe graduate to buying stuff and reselling the items at a profit.  What comes to mind are those that buy antiques or similar items at yard sales and then sell them online for a profit.

Book Publisher

If you like to write why not publish your own book?  Self-publishing through Amazon is becoming very common.  You can earn royalties and possibly establish yourself as an expert, which can lead to all kinds of side businesses as a coach or consultant.  And it can all be done remotely.  Or maybe you can have others write the books and you market them.  Others are doing it and again nobody knows or cares about your age.

Sell Your Photos

If you like photography and are good there are ways to sell the rights to use your photos online.  Like writing, the Internet thrives on good photography.

As you can see there are opportunities all over the Internet and age is not a factor.  You are limited only by your enthusiasm, work ethic, and imagination.
